Here's the example paragraph on immigration which we looked at in class on Friday.

An example introduction Immigration is a controversial subject which is constantly in the news. The recent rise in the number of immigrants in the United Kingdom from the new European Union countries has refocused debate on this issue. Besides this more recent wave of immigration, there is also a constant flow of migrants from other parts of the world, many of whom arrive seeking refuge from war or famine or claiming asylum. Some people believe that this increase in the number of immigrants is a threat to their way of life and that people from other countries are being given preferential treatment for things like housing and healthcare. A recent survey found that 54% of Britons were unhappy about the fact that EU citizens have the legal right to work in the UK. (The Guardian, 2009) However, statistical data about immigration is very hard to find, and most of the evidence for its negative impact is anecdotal. This essay will argue that, although immigration to the UK is not without problems, it has a largely beneficial effect on the country. It will attempt to explore the benefits to the UK of immigration by firstly examining the economic arguments surrounding the issue, and then by looking at the social issues involved.
